Industry News: QUOTA INCREASED; Tobacco farmers have hopes for crops' future

Author: WILLIAM DAVIS / Staff WriterW

High market prices and agreeable weather allowed many farmers to profit, if not prosper, last year. Hopes rose even further in December when the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that the country's tobacco farmers may grow 549 million pounds this year, up from 543 million in 2000.

USDA administrators allowed a 1-percent increase in the quota - the amount of tobacco that may be grown - after three straight years of heavy cuts.

Around 15 million pounds of that will be grown in Columbus County, said N.C. Cooperative Extension agent Michael Shaw.

By the beginning of next month, most farmers in the region will have begun seeding their greenhouses for the coming year's crop

Industry News: Report: Wyoming lags behind in anti-tobacco funding

A coalition of public health groups ranked Wyoming 39th in spending on programs to fight tobacco use.

Wyoming has spent $900,000 on tobacco prevention after receiving $25 million from a settlement with the tobacco industry in 1998, according to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.

The National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends Wyoming spend $7.38 million to $14.4 million a year. In 1999 the state had the highest rate of minors buying cigarettes in the country.

Diane Galloway, administrator of the state Substance Abuse Division, said the ranking is unfair because the state placed its settlement money in a trust fund and has been spending the interest only.
