Industry News: Smoking out new readers / Tobacco firm finances slick, glossy magazines

At first glance, Pursuit resembles any other glossy art, entertainment and lifestyle magazine on newsstands today.

There's a starlet on the cover (Sarah Jessica Parker) and a full menu of travel, shopping and trend features. You have to read the fine print to discover what sets Pursuit apart: "Financial support provided by Imperial Tobacco Canada Ltd."

Welcome to the brave new world of cigarette advertising. Canada's largest - with 70 per cent of the market - tobacco manufacturer mailed copies of Pursuit to 10,000 known adult smokers, men and women, across the country last month.

At the same time, it sent inaugural issues of Real Edge, a lifestyle magazine geared to young adult bad boys and The Art of Simple Living, subtitled Friends, Fashion, Home, Self, targeting a female readership.

Ever since the federal government enacted the Tobacco Act in 1995, Canada's Big Three tobacco companies have been scrambling to find news ways to advertise their wares. . .

"The industry traditionally increases advertising in January and February because that's when people try to quit," Mahood said. "A sophisticated mailing will get out the message that tobacco is a legitimate business. The message is meant to be very reassuring."

Francis Thompson, a policy analyst with the Non-Smokers Rights Association, put it even more bluntly.

"They have to reassure their customers that they aren't hopeless losers and that they aren't going to die."

Industry News: Vector Grp Confirms Nicotine-Free Cigarette Production

Vector Group Ltd. (VGR) confirmed it can process virtually nicotine-free tobacco cigarettes, which could be used to wean people off smoking.

Earlier Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal reported Vector developed a cigarette made from genetically modified tobacco that contains virtually no nicotine.

In a press release Tuesday, Vector said it tested the cigarettes in focus groups in the U.S. and overseas, with results showing that the cigarettes smoke and taste like conventional cigarettes.
