Industry News: Tobacco researchers wanted to trick smoking machines, critics say
Researchers at British American Tobacco thought they were on the verge of a revolutionary breakthrough in 1994: an ultra-light cigarette that actually tasted good to smokers. But health activists say the real goal of the secret project at British-American Tobacco (BAT) was to trick machines that measured tar and nicotine in cigarettes.
"This engineering was designed to give low readings to smoking machines, yet give smokers the sensation of smoking a regular cigarette," says an analysis by Canadian anti-tobacco groups.
But the "coaxial cigarette" landed in the ashtray of history, with even the tobacco company's own officials eventually denouncing the effort as affront to common sense, documents released Tuesday show.
Experiments with the coaxial cigarette, conducted mainly in Hamburg, Germany, are described in a new batch of internal tobacco-industry documents released Tuesday by Health Minister Allan Rock to kick off National Non-Smoking Week.
Industry News: Airport in clear over tobacco sponsorship
The Airport Authority's acceptance of a $2.4 million sponsorship from a tobacco company does not contradict the Government's anti-smoking policy, Secretary for Health and Welfare Yeoh Eng-kiong said on Wednesday.
The money has been used to improve facilities at one of the airport's 15 smoking lounges, including the installation of air filters and an independent ventilation system.
"There is no risk from secondary smoke from the lounge and the sponsorship doesn't involve tobacco advertising or publicity, so acceptance doesn't go against the anti-smoking policy," Mr Yeoh said.
