Company will market it as a way for smokers to overcome addiction

Vector Tobacco has genetically developed an almost nicotine-free tobacco, which it hopes to use in cigarettes that will be marketed to help smokers quit their addiction, the company said yesterday.
Vector Tobacco, a subsidiary of Vector Group Ltd., has obtained exclusive rights to a scientific process that genetically alters the tobacco seed to produce virtually nicotine-free leaf, the Miami parent company said.

Jackson County's decision to ban smoking at its Civic Center isn't popular with the Mardi Gras crowd.
People wearing $1,000 Mardi Gras ball gowns and tuxedos are having to stand out in the bad weather to smoke, Carnival association members complained to county supervisors Tuesday.
The smoking ban also makes crowd control hard at the private balls. People who go out to smoke often prop the doors open with cans or chairs so they can get back in. This leaves ways for people to sneak into the balls without paying, said Wayne Hines, vice president of the Jackson County Carnival Association.
Supervisors voted during the Mardi Gras season last year to ban smoking in all county buildings, including the Civic Center at the fairgrounds, which is often rented for private use. The ban hasn't been in effect for a full year yet.
