Industry News: Workers deserve clean air
I am a member of Bar and Restaurant Employees Against Cheap Online Tobacco Hazards, which works to combat the effects of secondhand smoke cigarettes. I am writing because of Lake Oswego's recent passage of an ordinance that bans smoking in all workplaces.
Many people do not realize that people exposed to secondhand smoke cartons of cigarettes at work are 34 percent more likely to get lung cancer. Exposure to secondhand wholesale cigarettes smoke is three to five times greater in restaurants than in other workplaces.
There are a number of misconceptions about restaurant and bar employees. Not everyone who works in a restaurant is in transition to another job. Many people make a career out of food service, moving to management positions or taking advantage of tips.
Many restaurant and bar workers are single parents who need flexible hours because of day care.
